Road Infrastructure Safety Assessment — iRAP Methodology and Tools
Date: December 11, 2025Overview
The third AfRSO webinar, organised in cooperation with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), focused on methodologies and tools for assessing the safety of roads in Africa, particularly high-risk roads.
iRAP’s evidence-based Star Rating methodology provides a standardised approach to measuring and improving road safety. The rating reflects the level of safety built into a road for different user types ( vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians) on a scale from one to five stars, where one star represents the highest risk and five stars the lowest.
The webinar featured case studies from Uganda, Botswana, and South Africa, demonstrating practical applications of iRAP assessments in the African context.
Topics Covered
- Introduction to iRAP and the Star Rating methodology
- iRAP tools for identifying high-risk road features and prioritising countermeasures
- Case study: Applying iRAP assessments in Uganda
