Road traffic crashes remain a major developmental and public health challenge across Africa. Strengthening policy, improving data systems, and fostering regional collaboration are essential to reducing fatalities and improving road safety outcomes.
The Current Road Safety Situation in Africa
Road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death in many African countries. Rapid urbanization, increased vehicle ownership, and the expansion of motorcycle transport have created new mobility opportunities while also increasing safety risks.
Motorcycles have become an essential part of urban mobility. They provide affordable transportation and employment for millions of people across African cities. However, the rapid growth of commercial motorcycle services has also contributed to increased road safety challenges.
Evidence shows that motorcyclists account for a significant share of road traffic fatalities in several African countries. Weak enforcement of safety regulations, low helmet use, and limited rider training contribute to this trend.
Key Challenges and Opportunities
One major challenge is the widespread informality of the motorcycle transport sector. Many riders operate without formal licensing, insurance coverage, or structured training, increasing the risk of crashes.
Infrastructure limitations also contribute to road safety risks. Poor road conditions, limited signage, and inadequate enforcement systems can increase the likelihood of accidents.
Despite these challenges, new opportunities are emerging through technological innovation and policy reform. Digital platforms, improved rider training programs, and better enforcement tools can significantly improve safety outcomes.
AfRSO's Response and Priorities
AfRSO works with African Union Member States to strengthen road safety systems through improved data collection, research, and policy coordination.
Key priorities include improving the quality of road safety data, supporting national road safety strategies, and facilitating knowledge sharing between countries. The Observatory also promotes the adoption of innovative safety solutions, including digital monitoring tools and improved training systems for motorcycle riders.
By supporting evidence-based policies and regional collaboration, AfRSO contributes to safer roads and more sustainable mobility across Africa.
