Advancing Road Safety Across Africa
The African Road Safety Observatory (AfRSO) supports African Union Member States through research, data systems, and collaboration to improve road safety policies and reduce traffic fatalities across the continent.
How We Function
AfRSO functions as an interactive forum for African governments and key stakeholders to tackle the continent's "road safety scourge".
Data Management:
Gathers and examines a continental/sub-regional road crash database to support research and data-driven solutions.
Policy Support:
Promotes best practices for national road safety strategies and assists member states in establishing lead safety agencies.
Capacity Building:
Provides technical assistance, organises webinars, provides software tools, methodologies and guidelines on topics such as crash data collection and "Safe System" approaches.
Monitoring:
Tracks progress toward Africa’s targets, such as the UN and AU Goal to halve road deaths by 2030.
Improving Road Safety Through Data
Reliable data is essential for effective road safety policies. AFRSO works with governments and institutions to harmonize road safety data collection, enabling evidence-based decisions that help reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities across Africa.
